Elite Gate Motor Replacement: The Fontana Owner’s Guide

We stock and install replacement motors for Elite swing and slide gate operators, and most Fontana jobs run between $850 and $1,450 installed, depending on whether you need the motor only or the full operator assembly with the control board. Same-day replacement is available for most Elite models we carry on the truck. The way most owners discover the motor has failed is a gate that hums but won’t move, or a gate that trips the breaker every time it tries to open.

What we see in Fontana specifically is heat and dust taking their toll on Elite motor capacitors and limit switches. The motors themselves are workhorses, but the components around them fail first, and a lot of “motor replacement” calls turn out to be a dead capacitor or a seized gear assembly that costs less to fix. We check before we quote, and we show you what we found before we replace anything.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite builds two main motor families we work with: the SL-series slide gate operators (SL-3000, SL-3000UL, and the heavier SL-7000 series used on commercial and long residential runs) and the CSW-series swing gate operators (CSW-200, CSW-200UL, and the 24-volt CSW-24V line). The replacement motor we spec depends on which series you have, and we identify that from the model tag on the operator cover, not from a guess.

One gotcha worth knowing: an Elite motor from an SL-3000 will not drop into an SL-3000UL without swapping the capacitor and adjusting the run-current setting on the board. They look nearly identical on the bench. We also see Fontana homeowners confuse the motor with the gearbox, especially on CSW units where the worm gear strips and the motor itself is still fine. OEM Elite motors are what we recommend for anything still under a manufacturer warranty, but for out-of-warranty residential gates, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a supplier we trust can save a few hundred dollars and carries the same one-year Done Right Promise from us. Vance Gate Repair Fontana is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Elite. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators, among the nine brands we service.

On the truck we carry the most common Elite replacement motors, starting capacitors, limit switch kits, and drive gears for the SL-3000 and CSW-200 series. For anything we don’t have in the truck, our Fontana parts suppliers usually have it to us the same morning.

Signs Your Elite Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Elite Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • The motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. This is almost always the starting capacitor failing, and it’s the most common Elite motor symptom we diagnose in Fontana. The capacitor is a $40 to $90 part, not a motor replacement, but only if you catch it before the motor overheats.
  • The gate trips the breaker mid-cycle. This usually means the motor is drawing too much current, either because the gearbox is binding or the wind load is over the operator’s rated capacity. We measure the amp draw with a clamp meter before condemning the motor.
  • The gate moves slower than it used to. In Fontana’s dry climate, the grease in the Elite gearbox breaks down faster than the manual suggests, especially on south-facing operators that bake in afternoon sun. A stiff gearbox makes the motor work harder and shortens its life.
  • The gate opens or closes partway, then reverses. This is typically a limit switch problem, not a motor problem, but a motor left cycling against a bad limit will burn itself out within a few months. We replace the limit kit and photograph the new settings before we consider a motor.
  • You hear grinding or a whine from the operator housing. On CSW series swing gates, a stripped worm gear makes a distinct grinding sound and the motor may still run fine. If we catch it before the gear shavings contaminate the motor bearings, you replace a gear, not a motor.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the pricing picture for Fontana, in writing, before we touch a tool:

  • Elite starting capacitor replacement: $120 to $190 installed
  • Elite limit switch kit replacement: $180 to $280 installed
  • Elite drive gear or worm gear replacement: $350 to $550 installed
  • Elite motor replacement (motor only): $550 to $800 installed
  • Full operator swap (motor, board, limit kit): $850 to $1,450 installed

The spread depends on the model, whether the arm bracket or chain needs attention too, and whether you want OEM or a quality aftermarket motor. Every quote is a flat price we hand you before work begins, under Haven Standard Clause 1. You’ll never see a surprise line item at the end. The motor itself carries the manufacturer’s warranty, and our labor carries the full 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year, we make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check the breaker, confirm the operator has power at the outlet, and note exactly what the gate does when you press the remote: hum, click, partial travel, nothing. That saves us diagnostic time, and it makes you an informed owner.

What we do not recommend is opening the operator housing and testing a capacitor or motor yourself. Elite operators run on 115V or 24V depending on the model, and the capacitor holds a charge even after the unit is unplugged. The 115V units in particular can give you a serious shock if you touch the wrong terminal. We’ve also seen Fontana homeowners replace a motor only to find the board was the problem all along, and now they’ve spent $600 on the wrong fix. We’ll diagnose it properly, show you the test readings, and give you a written price before any wrench comes out. Call (951) 476-1539 and a live person answers, any hour.
