BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Fontana Owner’s Guide

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT makes a wide range of swing and sliding gate operators, and the welding realities differ between them. The Deimos, Phobos, and Rigel swing-arm series mount to a steel post or masonry pillar, and the weak point is almost always the operator bracket or the gate hinge plate where the arm transfers force. The BFT sliding gate lines, like the Maxima and Icaro, ride on a steel track or a cantilever setup, and what fails there is typically the rack mounting tab, the guide rollers, or the end-stop plate.

How to identify what you have: the model plate on a BFT operator is usually on the underside of the housing cover or inside the control box door. It will show the model number and serial. If the plate is gone or unreadable, we measure the mounting hole spacing and the bolt size, because BFT changed hole patterns between older units and the current production. That’s the kind of thing that turns a 45-minute job into a three-hour headache if you buy the wrong bracket.

OEM versus aftermarket for BFT parts: for electronic components and gearboxes, we recommend OEM or a known-good equivalent with the same torque spec. For welded steel brackets, hinge plates, and fabricated supports, the aftermarket route is fine if the steel is the right thickness and the weld is done by someone who understands gate loading. A BFT arm bracket that fails at the weld after two years was usually under-specified from the start. We cut replacement brackets from 1/4-inch plate as a matter of course, heavier than what most factory setups came with, because the Fontana sun and the daily cycle count punish thin steel.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate drags or scrapes the ground near the hinge side. A broken or cracked weld on the hinge plate lets the gate leaf drop, and it only gets worse as the steel fatigues further. That drag you hear is the gate leaf grinding against concrete, putting side-load on the operator.
• The operator runs but the gate moves halfway and stops. When the arm bracket weld cracks, the arm can push the gate partway before losing mechanical contact. The limit switch reads a complete cycle, but the gate leaf never actually got to full open.
• You can see a gap opening where steel meets steel. If daylight shows through what used to be a closed joint at the hinge or bracket, the weld is in the process of letting go. It will not reseat itself.
• The gate leaf sways or wobbles when it moves. A hinge post that’s still bolted to the concrete but has broken its weld at the top shifts under load. The gate starts to oscillate, which puts torque on the operator bolts and the actuator arm.
• Rust streaks or brown weeping from a joint. In Fontana’s dry climate, steel doesn’t rust the way it does in coastal cities, but a failed weld that traps moisture will show a telltale orange line. That’s water getting into the crack and accelerating what’s already broken.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

What drives the range is steel thickness, how much of the old weld has to be ground out, and whether the gate leaf has to be lifted and supported while we work. There are things you can check on your own before anyone picks up a phone. Look at the hinge points on your BFT gate. If you see a crack in the weld bead or a gap at a mounting tab, you have the answer. What you should not do is fire up a welder and run beads on a gate leaf that’s still connected to an operator and under tension. Gates store a lot of energy, especially a BFT-driven gate with a 300 to 650 lb leaf on it. If a hinge lets go while you’re working underneath, there’s no time to move. We’ve seen the aftermath of that exact scenario on a Fontana job, and it’s why we do our own welding with the leaf blocked, supported, and disconnected from the operator, not hanging on a breaker bar and a prayer.
