By the time you call us, the metal has usually been failing for months. The good news is that Linear operators are solid; the weak points are almost always the surrounding fabricated steel.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

We weld and fabricate for the full Linear swing and slide gate lineup: the LRA, SLR, Apollo 1500/1600 series, and the older LINEAR MegaCode operator arms. The compatibility gotcha most Fontana owners hit is that Linear swing-gate arm brackets changed hole spacing between generations. A bracket from a 2008 Apollo 1500 will not line up with a 2015 replacement tube. We measure the arm’s pivot-to-pin distance and the bracket’s bolt pattern before we quote, so you don’t buy a part that fits on paper but not on the post.

For OEM versus aftermarket, we’re straightforward: on high-tension points like hinge and post brackets, we fabricate from 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch steel rather than ordering stamped OEM replacements. The original Linear brackets are fine until they rust through; a custom-welded plate is thicker, fits the existing holes, and costs within range of OEM. Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• Gate sags at the free end by more than an inch. The hinge weld or the hinge itself has stretched. In Fontana’s dry heat, the metal doesn’t rust so much as it fatigues from repeated thermal cycling between 40-degree nights and 105-degree afternoons.
• The operator arm bracket wobbles under load. The weld between the bracket and the gate frame has cracked. You’ll see a hairline gap that opens and closes as the motor cycles. That’s the part tearing itself apart one cycle at a time.
• The gate jerks or hesitates mid-swing. A post bracket or arm bushing has shifted out of alignment, and the motor is now fighting friction at a specific point in the arc. The sound is a tell: a rhythmic clunk, not a smooth hum.
• You see fresh rust staining below a weld. Water is getting behind the paint and tracking through the joint. In Fontana we see this mostly on gates irrigated by lawn sprinklers; the constant moisture wicks into the weld and corrodes it from the inside out.
• Post bolts are loose but the concrete is solid. The bracket’s bolt holes have egged out from repeated load reversals. A new bracket with a thicker plate will usually fix it without repouring the post, which is the expensive part most people think they need.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect a few things yourself. Check whether the hinge bolts are tight, look for visible cracks at weld joints, and listen for the clunk we described during operation. That’s diagnostic work, and it helps us when you call.

What we don’t recommend is firing up a home welder on a gate that’s carrying a couple hundred pounds of steel overhead or under motor tension. The two failure points that cause real damage are a gate leaf breaking free mid-swing and an operator arm snapping under torque while a child or a dog is nearby. The metal under load acts differently than it does on a workbench. We do this with the motor disconnected, the leaf blocked, and the welding position set so that nothing can shift if a bracket fails.
